It is said that to live wisely one has to be moderate in habits. This will be found arduous, because of our already ingrained habits of mind, body and behavior. Moderation takes “will” and intention, and ultimately some form of training or practice. Otherwise, one has to rely on age, for when we are beginning to hit sixty and seventy, our bodies and minds begin to counteract our childhood and adolescent impulses. However, can we learn to be moderate much earlier, without waiting so?Meditation is the key to moderation because when one sits still, one can actually train one’s self to generate the very important “pause” which is the the key to impuse control. It is not that when one begins to meditate all bad habits leave permanently, right off the bat. Only that through a daily practice, one can look closely at how the mind works and what motivates on to act or talk in our habitual manner. Sitting still is the great “pause”, for one is not doing anything particular and that physical stability leaks into our daily life as intelligent discernment and caution.
