The word, dharma, signifies the “way” or manner of living which realizes or displays enlightenment. This was established over a couple of thousand years ago by the Buddha. The system of Enlightenment envisioned by him was presented in a particular time and place that was appropriate in that time’s mindset. How would a more modern dharma be presented? It would be challenging to present an exact replica of Buddhism for a modern western culture, for much of the language comes from a different time and place. On the other hand, one cannot just meditate a little bit and hope to reinvent a whole religion. The whole of Buddhism is very vast. I believe must begin with the practice of meditation, mindfulness and concern for others. From here, we need a modern person’s sensibilities and understanding to translate many of the experiences and values from the three trainings mentioned above into a form that can be appreciated by a modern seeker of truth. The collection of these viewpoints, will be the start of a transformed, modern Dharma.
