When people think of Yoga, they usually think of the physical aspect of the system, or Hatha Yoga, which involves a complete physical culture for developing energy, health and well-being (through its many postures and breathing exercises). Also there are those who have studied the philosophical aspect of the system which defines the word as “union or yoke” with the transcendent. What are other definitions or aspects of the word which could shed light on its practical meaning, especially as it pertains to Self-knowledge?Through Self-knowledge, we learn to observe many of the prominent thoughts and feelings which prompt the mind to continually process our relationship to the world. When we can look squarely at these internal matters and learn to dissolve them, over time, we will come across an internal energy, known as “prana”. This is a powerful “life force” that extends into the body, mind and even the surroundings. Through this prana, we can learn to connect (make a union) with our experience which enables us to bring insight and intelligence into our living process.
